I filled a crack in an antique chest, now there’s a gap around the filler. What’s gone wrong?

Large gaps or splits in wood can be a problem because there is often a structural fault which caused the damage in the first place and so this must be addressed before repairs with Brummer may be carried out.

Unfortunately it may only be a matter of time before the problem occurs again, for example, if an antique chest develops a crack when moved to a house with central heating and that crack is repaired; in time it may reappear which indicates that further movement has taken place. So the repair hasn’t failed but the timber has dried out even more and shrunk away from the filler.

In your case therefore you must give the chest time to stabilise before making a repair. Also try to ascertain the reason for your problem. Is it a structural cause or a change in environment?
