Golden rules for a perfect finish.
  1. Always read the Instructions carefully. They are written to assist you and following them carefully will help you achieve a perfect finish.
  2. Always prepare thoroughly for the job in hand. Use the correct tools. If colour mixing have the colours to hand and at the correct working temperature.
  3. When painting over your work, the colour of Brummer Filler you use underneath is not so important. However for a perfect colour match when varnishing or polishing produces a see-through finish, choose a shade carefully and follow our tips for colour matching here.
  4. For a good colour match prepare your own test card. This could be a similar piece of wood to that being repaired, a piece of card or even stiff paper.
  5. Check for colour matching as you go along and always allow your test to dry to get an accurate representation of the finished colour.
  6. Take care to assess the size of the job correctly when filling cracks, gouges, holes or other blemishes. As a general rule Brummer is best for smaller repairs; although larger faults can be tackled if the Brummer is built up in layers, each layer being allowed to set before the next is applied.
Furthermore always ensure there is a base to work to because if the wood has been split right through or there is no base to a hole, you must use something to plug it. This can be a piece of scrap wood glued firmly into place or Brummer 2 Part Wood Filler which is robust enough to deal with many larger holes.
Alternatively if the finished colour is not important Brummer Quickfill which dries white is an ideal medium for filling some larger and shallower (but not deep) holes.
  7. If you have a particular problem that you’re not quite sure how to tackle, or need advice on which is the best product for the task at hand, e-mail us with your question here and our expert Technical Department will provide the solution that’s right for you.
